While 2025 was all about chasing the shiny new: AI, hyper-personalisation, real-time metrics, and chasing tech hacks for growth, 2026 seems to be looking decidedly retro.

The latest McKinsey report (McKinsey – Past Forward) shows a clear macro trend: brands investing in classic brand fundamentals — emotional connection, distinctiveness, consistency — are unlocking growth faster and more sustainably than those chasing only short-term metrics. In other words, it seems that branding isn’t just “nice to have” anymore — it’s becoming the biggest lever for success in 2026.

Why this matters to you: as a challenger brand with limited resources and big ambitions, you need to focus ruthlessly on the actions that actually create long-term impact. Deliberate, well-targeted brand investment is one of them.

Speaking of challenger brands.

We recently helped our friends at Rebel Bakehouse relaunch their wraps and bagels in New Zealand, with a repositioning of their brand, bold new packaging, and brand creative assets. They’re turning heads and a brand to watch out for See the work here.
